Ms. Hering is a Senior Project Engineer and manages DW Smith Associates’ Utility Department. Ms. Hering has over 24 years of extensive experience in all facets of municipal engineering, construction administration and public and environmental permitting.
Prior to re-joining DW Smith Associates, she held the position of Borough engineer in various municipalities throughout the State, including Metuchen, Leonia and Atlantic Highlands, along with representing several Planning, Zoning and Joint Land Use Boards in four counties as the Board Engineer.
Ms. Hering’s vast background in engineering design carried over into the construction phase of projects as she managed the contract administration and construction observation of several projects, including several capital improvement projects, solar panel installations, athletic complexes and sanitary sewer rehabilitations. She also works in the utility sector and assists clients obtaining all local, county, state and regulatory approvals required for various projects.
Ms. Hering received her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Duke University and worked at DW Smith Associates for two years in the mid-1990s before returning to college to earn her Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, concentrating in Construction Engineering and Management. She has been a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of New Jersey for over 16 years. Ms. Hering also holds a Professional Planners license (PP) and is a Certified Municipal Engineer (CME) and Public Works Manager (CPWM) in New Jersey.
Ms. Hering’s professional memberships included the New Jersey Society of Civil Engineers, the New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. She was the project engineer for the Sawmill Bicycle Trail in Brick Township, which received an award from the New Jersey Recreation and Parks Association in 2003.
Ms. Hering enjoys visiting schools and colleges to speak to students interested in pursuing careers in engineering and technology. Her extended family keeps her busy with family activities and celebrations. Ms. Hering also enjoys landscaping and home improvement projects, travelling, scuba diving, fishing, skiing, running and biking. Her annual hallmark event is participating in a 2-day bike ride sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to raise funds and awareness for individuals living with MS.
